Whitsun
noun

- the seventh Sunday after Easter, and the period around it

(Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary)

---
Whitsun stems from White Sunday, which is the Anglo-Saxon name for Pentecost. It is the festival of the coming of the Holy Spirit and is celebrated on the seventh Sunday after Easter. Whitsun was a traditional time for new members to join the Church and the term derives from the white garments which were worn for the ceremony.

Apart from Whitsun, other Christian festivals in the UK include:

- Shrove Tuesday = Known as Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday in other parts of the world.. Shrove Tuesday is the first day of the season of fasting and Lent. In England it is also known as Pancake Day, because pancakes contain lots of butter, fat and eggs, which are forbidden during Lent.

- Maundy Thursday = The beginning of the three day Easter celebration. The name Maundy stems from the Latin "mandatum", meaning a commandment. This refers to the commandment issued by Jesus at the Last Supper: "And now I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another." John 13:34

- Ascension = Marks the last appearance of Jesus to the disciples after his resurrection at Easter. The name Ascension comes from the accounts in the Bible that tell of Jesus being taken up into heaven - he ascended.
