The word "catch" is used in so many contexts, it would take months of OWADs to cover them all. In the expression "where's the catch", it is used in the sense of a tricky or unexpected condition or situation. The phrase is frequently used when an offer seems too good to be true (The car dealer is offering zero percent financing, so where's the catch?).

It's also useful if you assume that you have to do something in return for receiving a benefit, although it's not obvious what it is, like the ruthless Hollywood producer who gets a visit from Lucifer.

Satan: "Look, I have a business proposition for you. I can get you any deal you want, with anybody in the business. Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson, Steven Spielberg. You just tell me. And it will be on any terms you like."

The producer's eyes light up. "Okay, but what do you want from me?"

Satan gives the producer an evil grin. "Your immortal soul."

The producer sits back and thinks for a minute while scratching his head: "I still don't get it. Where's the catch?"
