WORD ORIGIN

Heck is an all-purpose alternative to the word "hell". It was and still is used in situations where strong language is not appropriate or desired.

Heck evolved as an alteration of the word hell around the end of the 19th century. This corresponds to the Victorian period in England when the country underwent rapid changes in many parts of society. During this time, a code of strict morals and behaviours developed that characterised Victorians as prudish.

Heck is an example of "pseudo-profanity", a word that is used in place of an obscene or offensive word. These include words like darn/dang (damn), gosh (God), shucks/shoot/sugar (sh_t) and friggin (f__king).
