"How about Big Ben!" someone suggested - a reference to London's tall and portly chief commissioner of Public Works, Benjamin Hall. The house rang out with unanimous applause and Hall was suddenly immortalised forever.
Sir Benjamin Hall (Big Ben) was a British politician and chief commissioner of public works who was noted for his role in the reconstruction of the Houses of Parliament after a fire in 1834.
