WAGS
acronym

- short for Wives And Girlfriends, meaning of professional athletes, particularly football players

---
The term WAGS - Wives And Girlfriends - was coined by the British press during the 2006 FIFA World Cup to describe the (usually) glamorous women who accompany the players and watch the football games from the best seats in the stadium.

WAGS get just as much attention from the European boulevard press as their football-playing men. This is due not only to their good looks and expensive clothing, but because of their sometimes enlightening comments.

According to Carly Zucker, girlfriend of English football star Joe Cole, life as a WAG is not easy: "Money can be a burden, that’s why I got stressed last year. I had too much too soon. I had a massive house that I couldn’t control or clean, it took all day."
