--- WORD ORIGIN
Internet video sites like YouTube have become wildly popular. So much so, that they are becoming the lunchtime entertainment of choice for many office workers. A game of darts and a pint at a nearby pub are passé. Now it's a salami and cheese on whole wheat bread while watching an episode of a favourite television soap opera, a news update or highlights from yesterday's football match.
The New York Times was one of the first to point out this trend, which has been dubbed "video snacking." While many people still work on spreadsheets or surf the Internet while gulping down a slice of pizza, others are finding that watching videos is an entertaining and informative alternative. A side benefit is that since it only requires a computer mouse, the risk of clogging up the keyboard with breadcrumbs is minimised.
Internet and telecommunications network providers, who continually monitor usage, have long since recognised the pattern. Miguel Monteverde, executive director of AOL Video in the United States had this to say: "Based on the amount of network traffic I’m seeing during lunchtime, our nation’s productivity is in question."
But for those who would rather spend their lunch hour (or half-hour as the case may be) developing a skill - like English vocabulary - we highly recommend "OWAD snacking!"
