--- In 1977, the CEO of Digital Equipment Corporation said, "There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home." Fortunately, others had a vision of the personal computer as a viable concept. But the path to reality was not always easy.
After building the first Apple computer in a garage with his friend Steve Wozniak, Steve Jobs recalls that they went to Atari Computer to pitch their idea. "We told the people at Atari that we've got this amazing thing, even built with some of your parts. What do you think about funding us? Or we'll give it to you. We just want to do it. Pay our salary, we'll come work for you." And they said, "No thanks."
"So then we went to Hewlett-Packard. They told us they didn't want us because we hadn't gone through college yet."
Etymology: Viable is from the French "viable," capable of life, and from the Latin "vita," or life. It was originally used in the sense of infants during times when the life expectancy of newborns was low.
