noun

- a feeling of spinning around and being unable to balance, often caused by looking down from a height

Upon hearing the word vertigo, many people think of a film by Alfred Hitchcock: Vertigo (Aus dem Reich der Toten). The Latin root of this word is vertere, meaning "to turn", and is the feeling that people with vertigo experience – that the space around them is turning.
A similar condition is dysequilibrium, a feeling of unsteadiness. Basically, the difference between the two is that vertigo makes you feel like your surroundings are moving. Dysequilibrium makes you feel dizzy and about to fall over.

According to the British Medical Journal, many people use the word vertigo incorrectly, in part because we tend to associate the word with heights, and because dictionary definitions are sometimes not quite accurate.

Vertigo is a medical condition that is commonly caused by a problem with the inner ear, with one's sight or with the sensory nerves. The feeling of dizziness when looking down from great heights is normal, and practically everyone experiences it.
