WORD ORIGIN
Vanity Fair has been the title of several different magazines. The term itself originates from the allegorical story The Pilgrim's Progress, published in 1678 by John Bunyan, in which there is a town fair (Fest) held in a village called Vanity. William Thackeray adopted the expression for his 1848 novel "Vanity Fair: A Novel without a Hero”, a satirical look at society in early 19th century England.

Vanity, which derives from the Latin vanitatem, meaning emptiness or foolish pride, is used in other contexts as well:

vanity press - a book publisher that charges writers a fee in return for publishing their books or otherwise makes most of its money from the author rather than from the public sales of books

vanity license plates - a personalised number plate (Autonummernschild) with the owner's choice of numbers or letters, usually forming a recognisable phrase, slogan, or initialism (I LUV OWAD for instance)

vanity case - a small handbag or case used by women for carrying cosmetics or toiletries

The adjective vain, among other things, means "excessively proud of one's appearance or accomplishments." Some of you may remember the 1973 Carly Simon hit "You're so vain”:

You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you
You're so vain, I'll bet you think this song is about you
Don't you? Don't you?

Because of Carly Simon's love affairs with stars like Cat Stevens, Mick Jagger, Kris Kristofferson and Warren Beatty, in addition to being married to James Taylor, the song raised public interest regarding whom the song was written about. To this date, she has refused to reveal the song's vain subject.

Vanity is the polite mask of pride.
- Friedrich Nietzsche
