Did you know?
upshot noun
- something which happens as a result of other actions, events or decisions
(Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary)
--- The meaning of upshot, as in a result or outcome, stems from the sport of archery where the expression once referred to the final shot in a match. Why it was called upshot, as opposed to downshot, last shot, end shot or some other type of shot, is unclear. In any case, it eventually assumed the figurative sense of the final result or outcome.
Etymological research reveals that words often change meaning or take on additional senses. Upshot for example is used in another context that tends to irritate language purists. In the sentence that follows, it refers to an advantage or benefit: One of the major upshots of prefab building is its decreased environmental impact. Perhaps the major dictionaries will one day add this definition to upshot. In the meantime, those opposed to this linguistic abuse will have to live with it.
During our research we discovered a few other common expressions that originate from archery.
- wide of the mark, off the mark = inaccurate, not exact (His analysis of the market situation in Asia is wide of the mark)
- hit the bull's eye = accurate, spot on (Nice presentation. You hit the bull's eye.)
- on target = accurate, spot on (His predictions were right on target)
