WORD ORIGIN

Tutelage (circa 1605) stems from the Latin "tutela," meaning a "watching, protection." It is related to "tutor," to instruct or train. Tutelage has several meanings:

- the capacity or activity of a guardian; guardianship
- the capacity or activity of a tutor; instruction or teaching
- the state of being under the direction of a guardian or tutor

Many people who have achieved fame, fortune and success have managed this on their own. Former U.S. President Bill Clinton and Microsoft founder Bill Gates are two examples. Others have relied on mentors, under whose tutelage they found the path to success.

Sigmund Freud studied under Josef Breuer at the University of Vienna and Jean Martin Charcot at the Salpetrière Hospital in Paris before developing his own theories.

Director Steven Spielberg got his start under the tutelage of Sid Sheinberg before going on to become one of Hollywood's most successful filmmakers.

And boxing great Muhammad Ali, had it not been for the guidance of a local policeman and boxing coach in his hometown, may not have gone on to "float like a butterfly and sting like a bee" as he famously said before his first championship fight against Sonny Liston, which of course he won.
