If ever there was a word that is self-descriptive, it's the adjective ubiquitous. Meaning "present everywhere" (from the Latin ubique "everywhere" - ubi = where + que = any, ever), ubiquitous seems to be just that: everywhere. Once the primary domain of academic and scientific professionals, the term ubiquitous became popular in the business world in the 1990s. Since then, it has spread like wildfire.

CEOs talk of a ubiquitous business presence. Human resources managers boast of ubiquitous corporate cultures. Sales people pitch their products with claims of ubiquitous support. The IT department says the company needs ubiquitous wireless LAN access and ubiquitous computing.

Some argue that ubiquitous is too ubiquitous and that it suffers from overuse, like these other business phrases:

- best of breed = a product that is the best in its class. This expression was stolen from the world of dog shows where one dog is judged as being the most representative of its breed.

- at the end of the day = in the end, to summarize. After hearing this phrase at work, most people get the sudden urge to clear off their desk and go home.

- give 110 percent = to put forth more than 100 percent effort. No one has figured out how to achieve this yet.

- low-hanging fruit = in sales jargon, customers who are the easiest targets or a business concept that reaps the most profit with the least effort. An interesting phrase, although we sometimes forget that Eve went for the low-hanging fruit in the Garden of Eden.
