To turn over a new leaf derives from turning the page of a book to begin a new page.

Oscar Wilde, Irish borne playwright and 19th century society darling, led an exciting but scandalous life. Married with two children, he eventually discovered that he was attracted to men. This attraction landed him in jail because such behaviour was illegal in England during those days.

After spending two years in a jail in Reading, his friends urged him to turn over a new leaf. He agreed. A few days later a friend returned to his hotel suite, which he was sharing with Wilde, and apparently found Wilde in the room with a bellboy.

The shocked friend said, "You said you would turn over a new leaf." Wilde then replied, "That's true, but I haven't yet gotten to the bottom of the page."
