turn-down service
noun phrase

- In hotels, the practice of folding back the blanket and sheet of the bed in the evening, sometimes accompanied by putting a mint on the pillow or a cordial on the night stand.

Remember when mum came into the room before bedtime, read a story, fluffed the pillow and pulled the covers up so that you felt safe and snug and ready to go to sleep? In English we call this "tucking in" (Pour me a glass of wine while I go tuck Johnny in).

Many hotels offer the same service, just without the bedtime story and of course without mum. It's called the "turn-down service" and is carried out by the service personnel (once called the maid). The basic version of the turn-down service involves folding the bed covers back. As an added touch, some hotels place a small piece of chocolate or hard candy on the pillow so that your teeth have a nice coating of sugar while you sleep.

Other hotels offer "premium" turn-down service that might include fresh towels, placing a relaxing CD in the stereo system or replacing all of the toiletries (shampoo, toothpaste, hand cream) that you stuck in your luggage when you arrived.

If you are uncomfortable with the idea of a stranger barging into the room, advise the hotel that you would like to "turn down" (reject) the turn-down service.
