They say the way to a man's heart is through his stomach — or tummy, which is a baby-talk alteration of stomach. Unfortunately bacteria and viruses, or bugs as we like to call them, also find their way to the tummy on occasion. The consequences, as everyone knows, are rather unpleasant.

In medical jargon, a tummy bug is called gastroenteritis (from the Greek gastros, or belly, and the Greek enterikos, relating to the intestines). It's a catch-all term for an infection or irritation of the digestive tract, particularly the stomach and intestines. In many cases, a tummy bug will force its victim to pray to the porcelain gods. Severe cases can result in a high fever.

Gastroenteritis is typically caused by a viral infection. Bacteria can also be the culprit however, which is frequently a result of poor sanitation, the lack of safe drinking water, or contaminated food-conditions. A condition that affects some travellers is jokingly referred to as Montezuma's Revenge, or technically speaking traveller's diarrhoea.

Although the term "bug" has been around since the early 17th century, it wasn't until the turn of the 20th century that someone got the idea of using it in the sense of microbes. The original meaning referred to insects. One of the earliest references in this context was so-called bed bugs. These are parasitic insects of the cimicid family whose preferred habitat includes warm houses, especially nearby or inside of beds, just the place you want to go to when the tummy bug strikes.
