WORD ORIGIN

TTYL, short for Talk to You Later (also Type To You Later), is an acronym or text message used in online chat, IM (Internet Messaging), e-mail, blogs, or newsgroup postings. TTYL belongs to a group of acronyms and abbreviations that are part of a new language referred to as digispeak, geekspeak, Internet speak, Webspeak and Imglish among others.

Internet speak is characterised by the extensive use of acronyms and abbreviations, misspellings and generally bad grammar. This has led many language experts to lament what they view as a backward step in the development of the English language. But like the Internet itself, digispeak has taken on a life of its own. There is little that can be done to control it, which is one of the reasons for its popularity.

Despite the apparent demise of the English language, researchers at the University of Toronto are suggesting that IM among teenagers actually represents "an expansive new linguistic renaissance." They go on to say that instant messaging allows teens to use a "robust mix" of colloquial and formal language and that far from ruining their ability to communicate, IM lets teenagers show off what they can do with language.

So for those who believe the English language is on the path to extinction, as Mark Twain is once reported to have said, "The reports of my death are premature."
