WORD ORIGIN
The English suffix -ism was first used to form an action noun from a verb. It comes from the Greek suffix -ismos that also forms abstract nouns from verbal stems. Its usage was later expanded to indicate larger organized systems, as well as concepts related to philosophy, ideology, doctrine and practices.
Among other things, the -ism suffix can be used to express concepts such as:
- doctrine, philosophy or religion (pacifism, Judaism)
- individual theories (Marxism, Darwinism)
- politics/government (communism, fascism)
- artistic movement (impressionism)
- action, process or practice (journalism)
- characteristic, quality or origin (heroism)
- illness or condition (alcoholism)
- characteristic speech patterns (Bushism, Blairism)
Many -isms are defined as an act or practice by some, while also being defined as the doctrine or philosophy behind the act or practice by others. Examples include activism, altruism, despotism, elitism, optimism and terrorism.
Truism is simply a case of turning a verb (true) into a noun. A truism is frequently defined as a "self-evident truth." In other words, it describes something that is so obvious, it need not be said or explained. Many famous quotes are essentially truisms written in a clever and humorous style. Here is a small selection:
There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about.
