Did you know?
top-notch adjective
- excellent, superb
(Collins Dictionary)
--- In the expression top-notch, it's easy to see what role "top" plays. The mystery here is the word notch, which can mean a couple of different things:
- a V-shaped cut in a hard surface, such as in a piece of wood
- a hole or mark on the edge of a body part (specialized medical term)
- an imaginary point or position in a system of comparing values, where a higher position is better and a lower position is worse
The very last definition is obviously what notch is referring to, but no one really knows exactly what mechanical image is being relied on. One common suggestion is that it refers to notches that lumberjacks cut into trees after which they hammer in boards that enable them to climb up the tree in order to fell it.
Another theory says that it might have something to do with a scoring system for a game in which notches are cut into a stick or tree branch. There are other interesting stories, but none of them are top-notch enough to adequately explain the origin.
