WORD ORIGIN

Toddler stems from the verb "toddle," meaning to run or walk with short, unsteady steps, such as when a young child is just learning to walk. The term toddler could just as well be applied to older people who find it difficult to walk in their twilight years. But out of respect for the senior generation, we use words like "shuffle."

Having toddlers around the house can be both nerve-wracking and fascinating. A quick search of the world's news services provides ample evidence. In the U.S. state of Ohio, a curious toddler got his father into trouble for instance. The father was arrested after authorities said his three-year-old son was found in the middle of a busy four-lane motorway driving a motorised, battery-operated toy truck.

The man told police that he had been at home working on his resume when he lost sight of his child for just five minutes. Witnesses said the toddler was puttering down the middle of the busy road at five miles an hour. Not only that, he was going the wrong way!
