to a T idiom
- exactly; to perfection
(Oxford English Dictionaries)
--- While it's not clear if this expression actually originated as "to a T," this form was apparently first recorded in a 1693 satire from James Wright in which he writes, "All the under villages and towns men come to him for redress; which he does to a T."
Some have suggested that this expression is really a short version of "to a tee" (as in golf) or "to a tea," however there is no evidence to back-up these theories. Another interesting idea is that it stems from T-shirt since the phrase is often written and spoken as "fits to a T." Other ideas include the T square, a technical drawing instrument or that it perhaps refers to completing the letter "T" by crossing it. But again, these are only wild guesses.
Michael Quinlon of World Wide Words fame says that most experts believe the T is merely the first letter of a word, such as "tittle," which was used in the same context nearly a century before the expression "to a T" first appeared.
