titillate verb
- to produce feelings of interest, pleasure, or sensual excitement in someone
(Macmillan Dictionary)
--- The Latin word titillare means to touch lightly, so as to cause a strange and uncomfortable sensation in the nerves. It also reminds us of these similar-sounding words:
- tit = (slang, rather vulgar) women's breast or nipple (Her tits were showing through her blouse. I don't think it was an appropriate clothing choice for the business conference)
- titter = to giggle or laugh nervously (The director's notebook used a picture of his sexy young girlfriend as a screensaver, which made everyone in the meeting room titter when they saw it)
- twitter = a short whistle or chirping sound made by birds (Although my hotel was in the middle of town, I could hear birds twittering in the morning)
This brings us back to our word of the day, because much of the traffic on Twitter, the micro-message service, is gossip aimed at titillating readers.
The person sending "tweets" gives out just a small piece of information. In this way, readers are interested in finding out more. There are many serious subjects dealt with on Twitter, of course, but celebrities have by far the most followers.
As an alternative to titillate, we can say that our interest is "aroused", another word used mainly to talk about sensual excitement.
