Titan, and the corresponding adjective titanic, is one of several English words that originated from Greek mythology. The Titans were a primeval race of powerful deities, descendants of Gaia (Earth) and Uranus (Sky), that ruled during the legendary Golden Age. They were massive immortal beings of incredible strength and stamina and were also the first group of Greek gods and goddesses.
Other words that derive from Greek mythology include:
- cereal = food made from grains, from Ceres the goddess of agriculture
- hypnosis = an artificially induced state of unconsciousness, from Hypnos the god of sleep
- nectar = fruit juice, from nectar the drink of the gods
- chaos = disorder and confusion, from khaos, the nothingness from which the universe was born
- nemesis = enemy, from Nemsis the god of retribution
- tantalize = tease or torture, from Tantalus, a figure from Greek mythology who was made to stand in a pool of water beneath a fruit tree with low branches, with the fruit out of his grasp and the water always receding before he could eat or take a drink.
