--- In January 2011, Amy Chua, a law professor at Yale University, published an essay in the Wall Street Journal with the headline "Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior". The article was adapted from her book "Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother" and discusses her approach to child-rearing, which focuses on discipline, respect and academic results.
In the essay and book, Chua talks about forbidding television, not allowing them to play with other children, making them practice their music instruments three hours a day and insisting on nothing less than top grades in school. Chua's "outing" created a controversy with some labelling her a heartless mother.
Chua explains the tiger reference this way: "The tiger is a living symbol of strength and power and generally inspires fear and respect."
So what do we call women who don't take the fearsome approach to motherhood?
Here are a couple of other mum types:
- helicopter (or chopper) mum - Describes mums (or dads) who overprotect and over-parent out of fear that something bad might happen to their children. The idea is that they hover over them like a helicopter.
- free range mum - The counterpart to the chopper mum, her approach is to give children the freedom to experience things on their own so that they learn from their mistakes. Think of it like the "free range chicken" that is able to roam instead of being cooped up in a cage.
