Thwarting the world record

On June 9th, 1978, Bob Specas attempted to topple 100,000 dominoes at New York's Manhattan Center. Unfortunately, his effort to break the world record was thwarted during the preparations when a television cameraman dropped his press badge - and set off 97,500 dominoes. The record for toppling dominoes has meanwhile reached well over 4 million!

Etymology: From the Middle English thwerte, from the adjective thwert "perverse, obstinate, adverse", from Old Norse thvert, from an Indo-European root shared by Latin torquere "to twist".

By the way, thwart is the only word in the English language that begins with "thw".
