WORD ORIGIN

Some non-native English speakers might think of the children's song "row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream" when they hear the word row. For unknown reasons however, row is also another word for a loud argument or fight or a serious disagreement.

Winston Churchill, despite his public image as a calm statesman (which he was) and the ultimate British gentleman (for the most part), in private he rarely hesitated to back down from a good fight. In Chris Wrigley's biography of Churchill, he cites several disagreements between Churchill and Nancy Astor, a rich London socialite and the first female member of parliament. The two disliked each other immensely.

Churchill hated the idea of a woman in parliament and once said to her, "I find the intrusion of a woman into the House of Commons as embarrassing as if she burst into my bathroom when I had nothing with which to defend myself, not even a sponge." She then replied, "Winston, you're not handsome enough to have worries of that kind."

In another row at Blenheim Palace, Churchill's birthplace, Nancy Astor was so angry with Churchill that she screamed, "If I were your wife, I would put poison in your coffee," to which Churchill famously replied, "And if I were your husband, I would drink it!"
