My car was TOTALLED after I made maintenance and general repairs. Can the repair and maintenance costs be recovered?

--- Stefan Eriksson had hoped that millions of video gamers would experience the thrill of street racing on a hand-held device he helped develop. --- WORD ORIGIN
Totalled, short for total loss, is an insurance term that describes the condition of a damaged car when the cost to repair the damage exceeds the actual value of the car.
In the US, if a vehicle is damaged and the cost of repairs and the salvage value combined exceeds the current value of the vehicle, the insurance company may declare it totalled. Generally, the insurance provider will only pay out the lesser cost of buying a replacement vehicle, instead of paying to repair the old one to its previous state.
In the UK, a car in this condition is called a write-off, an accounting term. Most of these cars still contain parts that can be sold or the metal from the car can be sold for scrap (the verb scrap means to throw something away and use the parts for something else).
