Disputes over the BBC licence fee have arisen once more and while there are many of us who still value THE BEEB and think it is the world’s foremost broadcaster, if it wants to rely on our support then it really is time to clean up its act.

Cambridge Dictionary

---
You'll often hear British (and American) speakers referring to the BBC as the Beeb. The origin of this affectionate reference is easy to understand because "beeb" is what you say before "ee-C" in BBC.

The Beeb is the world's oldest national broadcasting organisation and the largest broadcaster in the world by number of employees, with over 20,000 in total. It was established under a Royal Charter and operates under an agreement with the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.

The BBC is also known as "Auntie" in the UK. In the early years of its development the administrators were largely of middle class origins and demonstrated daily that they knew what was best for listeners and later on the viewers. This became known as the "Auntie knows best" syndrome. Hence the shortened version of "Auntie".

And don't be surprised to hear the two spoken together: "Auntie Beeb".

"I am wondering whether THE BEEB's reputation will also suffer following a Brexit."
