When searching for the origin of expressions like "that's the way the cookie crumbles", the hope is that an interesting result surfaces. Or at least pub trivia that might be useful in impressing friends. This is unfortunately one of those phrases that someone simply thought up out of the blue and over the years found a permanent place in the language. As they say, that's just the way the cookie crumbles.

Scientists have taken an interest in how cookies crumble though. They say they know why they crumble - and it has little to do with the way cookies are packaged and transported. Instead, laser tests carried out by British physicists found that cookies - or biscuits, as they are known in Britain -- often develop "fault lines" a few hours after baking.

According to researchers at the University of Loughborough in Leicestershire, central England, as biscuits cool down after coming out of the oven, they pick up moisture around the rim which causes them to expand. At the same time, moisture at the center makes them contract. The difference results in a build-up of strain forces that can pull a cookie apart.

If that is not enough to impress your mates, here are a few other phrases with the word cookie:

- a smart cookie = someone who is clever (Ask Bob to look at your computer - he's one smart cookie)

- a tough cookie = someone who is very determined and who usually succeeds (Let Linda negotiate the deal - she's a tough cookie)

- cookie cutter = something that appears mass produced or identical to others (They used a cookie cutter approach to building the homes on this street)

- caught with hand in the cookie jar = to catch someone doing something wrong such as stealing (He is no longer with the company because he was caught with his hand in the cookie jar)
