WORD ORIGIN
Like most acronyms, the precise origin of TBD is, well it's still TBD………

TBD was initially a favourite acronym among bureaucrats, both in government and business. For some people, it's simply another way of saying “I don't know” in response to a question. In any case, it has made its way into our everyday language.

While the original meaning was “to be defined or determined”, it has other connotations.

Acronyms have been around for centuries, but became widespread beginning in the 20th century. They are sometimes referred to as initialisms, though there is a slight difference in their definition. An acronym describes any abbreviation formed from the first letters (or initials) of a series of words that can be pronounced as a word itself. Examples are SCART (Syndicat des Constructeurs d'Appareils Radiorécepteurs et Téléviseurs) and NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation). An initialism is an abbreviation formed from the first letters of a series of words that are not pronounced together as a word. IBM (International Business Machines) and BMW (Bayerische Motoren-Werke) are examples of initialisms.

Law enforcement agencies and military organisations are known for creating acronyms for almost anything, some of which are used by the general population meanwhile:

SOP - standard operating procedure
NGO - non-government organisation
SAR - search and rescue
DUI or DWI - driving (while) under the influence. This was previously referred to as drunk driving. DWI includes both alcohol and drugs.
DWD - driving while distracted. This is a relatively new acronym that was created in response to the increasing numbers of drivers distracted by an activity while behind the wheel - applying makeup, eating a hamburger, drinking a cup of coffee, yelling at the children or talking on a mobile phone for instance - and as a result cause an accident.
