Tally up is a phrasal verb meaning to add figures together to come up with a total. A tally originally referred to a stick marked with notches to indicate an amount owned or paid. The word can be traced to the Latin "talea," which was a "cutting from a tree, a rod or a stick."

The split tally was commonly used in medieval Europe to record the exchange of money and debt. A stick was marked with a system of notches and then split lengthwise. The two halves recorded the same notches and each party to the transaction received one half as proof.

This technique was later refined to make the two halves of the stick different lengths. The longer part was called stock and was held by the party that had given money or other items to the other party in advance. This is the origin of the word "stockholder."

The most prominent use of the split tally in medieval England was as a tool of the Exchequer for the collection of taxes by local sheriffs. In 1834 the government ordered the tallies to be burned in a stove in the House of Parliament. The fire unfortunately got out of control and set the building ablaze.
