--- WORD ORIGIN
Before salaries were electronically deposited to bank accounts, workers were paid in cash or received cheques, which could then be cashed. Even before governments instituted tax systems, employers often withheld part of the employees' salary. This was sometimes done as punishment, such as when a worker failed to meet a production ratio, or as payment for buying goods from a company store or to pay for company housing. The remaining amount was their take-home pay, literally the amount they could "take home" in their pocket.
Many countries have electronic deposit systems in place these days. But the concept of take-home pay has not changed. Workers in most countries have a variety of deductions, from taxes and health insurance to mandatory retirement plan contributions. Politicians like making an issue out of take-home pay (meaning less taxes and more take-home pay). In 1948, when former U.S. President Richard Nixon was campaigning for the U.S. Senate, his campaign team created a theme song around this issue. Part of it went like this:
Vote for Nixon on election day. Vote for Nixon and you'll keep your take-home pay.
Despite the song never becoming a hit, Nixon still won the election.

"Take-home pay is a usually a very private matter, it is not normally discussed between co-workers."
