swap
noun, verb
- to trade or exchange one thing for another
(American Heritage Dictionary)
---
Swap traces back to the 14th century "swappen," which originally meant to strike or strike the hands together, which was likely imitative of the sound of hitting. The sense of exchanging or trading is first recorded in the 1590s, possibly from the practice of slapping the hands together as a sign of agreement in bargaining.
The sense of striking something has long been obsolete. Today, it primarily means exchanging or trading one thing for something else. Swap can also be found in specific expressions such as:
- swap meet = a gathering at which enthusiasts or collectors trade or exchange items of common interest, like a flea market (If you're looking to buy or sell any hard-to-find classic automotive parts, then the Ahwooga.com Swap Meet is the selling or shopping experience for you!)
derivatives swap = in finance, a swap refers to exchanging one type of asset, cash flow, investment, liability, or payment for another (An Italian judge has ordered four foreign banks to stand trial for aggravated fraud stemming from a 2005 derivatives swap for a 1.68 billion euro bond)
player swap = in sports, when two teams exchange or trade players (Chelsea to Launch £10m Plus Player Swap Offer for German International)
