The word suave, which stems from the Latin suavis (agreeable, sweet, pleasant), usually conjures up images of James Bond, George Clooney, Frank Abagnale.
Frank Abagnale? Yes, Frank Abagnale was one of the world's suavest men of the past decades. Now a sought-after security consultant, Abagnale is a former a confidence trickster, check forger and impostor whose life was the basis for the movie Catch Me If You Can starring Leonardo Dicaprio, another suave man in his own right.
Abagnale posed as an airline pilot, a doctor, a U.S. Bureau of Prisons agent and a lawyer, escaping from police custody twice before he was 21 years old. Charming, elegant and polite, all of those characteristics that one requires in order to be labelled as suave, Abagnale had them all.
In the meantime, Abagnale recognizes that the Internet has eliminated "coolness" as a prerequisite for being a trickster:
"In the old days, a con man would be good looking, suave, well-dressed, well-spoken and presented himself well. Those days are gone because it's not necessary. The people committing these crimes are doing them from hundreds miles away."
