To be stupefied is to be so amazed or astounded that you are unable to speak. You can be stupefied in a negative way because of something that someone else has done which you think is really dumb (I was stupefied by his response to my question) or you can be positively stupefied because of something amazing or wondrous (The first time I saw the Grand Canyon I was stupefied!).

If you think that stupefy/stupefied and stupid are etymologically related, then you are certainly not brainless, out to lunch, dim or half-witted, to name just a few synonyms for stupid. Stupefy is from the Latin "stupefacere," to make stupid, senseless or numb, which further derives from "stupere" (to be stunned).

Stupere is the root of the Latin "stupidus" (amazed, foolish, dull) and of course the English stupid. Stupidus eventually stems from a Proto-Indo-European term (stupe) that meant to push, hit, knock or beat under the concept of being hit or beat senseless.
