Stash stems from the verb "to stash," meaning to hide or conceal something. The origin is unknown but may be a blend of "stow" (to store away) and cache (French Canadian trappers' slang for a hiding place for supplies).

While the verb has been around since the late 18th century, the noun "stash" appeared at the turn of the 20th century. In the 1940s it took on the specific meaning of a personal supply of narcotics. This sense was popularized during the 60s and is still commonly used today.

Interestingly knitters (Stricker) affectionately refer to their perpetually growing supply of wool as stash... which reminds us of a joke:

A woman who was speeding on the highway. When a police officer pulled alongside the car, he glanced in and was astounded to see that she was knitting. Realizing she was not paying attention to his flashing light and siren, he rolled down his window and shouted, "Pull over!"
"No!" shouted the woman back, "It's a scarf!"
