stark
noun

clearly distinguished or delineated

(American Heritage Dictionary)

Stark is from the Old English "stearc," meaning "stiff, strong, rigid, obstinate; stern, severe, hard; harsh, rough, violent." It has cognates in several other languages such as the German "stark."

Stark is used in several different contexts. In our example a "stark choice," it means clear, defined or unquestionable. A similar expression is "stark contrast," which suggests two things that are clearly different. Campaigning politicians like to talk about voters being offered a stark choice between the candidates or that the candidate's views and policies are in stark contrast to one another.

Or in an effort to set itself apart, a company might advertise its products as being a stark contrast to the competition. This implies that the competition's product is of inferior quality or offers less features so consumers enjoy a clear choice between good and bad. Stark is used in these cases to emphasise that there is a significant difference.

Stark is also used as a synonym for entirely, completely, such as describing someone as "stark raving mad." Then there's the sense of grim, desolate, bleak (The stark beauty of the landscape attracts adventure tourists) or bare, unadorned (The outside walls of the building are a stark white) and blunt, straightforward (The defence lawyer presented the stark facts of the case to the jury).
