standard-bearer
noun phrase

- the leader of an organization, movement, or political party; someone who carries a flag or banner

(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

---
Dating back to about 150 BC, a Roman standard was a long pole with a flag, banner or other symbol that identified a Roman legion or infantry. The standard was used for communication between the leaders and the troops. When the soldiers heard the sound of a trumpet, they looked to the standard for instructions.

During a battle, the standard-bearer would raise, lower, or wave the banner as a way to direct the soldiers on the battlefield. For example, specific signals would inform them that they should change formation, or use a different strategy.

Little wonder, then, that the person holding the standard was essential to the success of the battle. Some Roman standards had images of the emperor, or figures of proud animals, such as eagles, lions or dragons, in gold or silver at the top of the pole.

The standard was a symbol of pride, and if captured by the enemy, the army would fight to regain it. When the fighting was over, the standard marked the meeting place for soldiers to gather.
