Yogurt stakeout

Police in Germany staked out a lay-by for two days to catch a lorry driver dumping a yogurt pot on the grass.

Street cleaners at Donauwoerth complained to police that a banana yogurt pot and a spoon had been dumped on the verge every day for years.

Council spokesman Walter Langer said: "It's no joke. Over the years we have collected more than a thousand yogurt cartons, one each day, with the spoon and a piece of aluminium foil."

Police were rewarded after 30 hours on stakeout when they caught Michael Carstensen, 55. He was fined £250.

Etymology: Stakeout stems from the verb "stake," meaning to mark an area of land with a stake (a piece of wood). The verb "stake out" is also used in a figurative sense to describe claiming something for oneself. This might include something like concert seats (They waited in line all night to stake out seats near the stage) or even an opinion (The candidates staked out their positions on the Euro bail-out).
