WORD ORIGIN

Stag is the term for a male deer (also called a buck) and has been associated with male strength and virility for centuries. There is not much documented evidence to explain the origin of the stag night.

Many sources point to 5th century Sparta, where military comrades would feast and drink in honour of a friend on the eve of his wedding. This would mark the end of bachelorhood and the swearing of continued allegiance to male friends.

Although stag nights can be held for no apparent reason, many of them are organized for bachelors who are about to get married. Like in Sparta, it signifies the end of the single life and passage into a more "responsible" type of living.

Most stag nights involve lots of drinking. Other activities are frequently organised that some people might find inappropriate, but for others would generate a response like, "Well, boys will be boys!"

In Britain, Canada and Ireland the event is also referred to as a stag party, stag do or stag weekend. In Australia they are called bucks parties and in America bachelors parties.
