Although there are different types of squeegees, the most common are those used for cleaning windows. The squeegee can be traced back to the United States in 1936, when Italian immigrant Ettore Steccone invented a lightweight, brass-handled tool with a single, ultra-flexible blade. The "Ettore," still manufactured by the late Steccone's company, remains a favorite among professional window cleaners.

The squeegee even has its place in the tragic history of September 11. Window washer Jan Demczur used an Ettore to free himself and five others from an elevator shaft in the World Trade Center during the attacks. The blade was lost, but Demczur's squeegee handle is now enshrined at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC.

Some cities in the U.S. have experienced a plague of so-called squeegee kids or squeegee merchants. These are usually young and/or unemployed people who run up to cars at traffic lights and start cleaning windshields without asking in the hope that the driver will pay them for their work. The city of New York became so irritated that Mayor Rudi Giuliani set out on a crusade to end the practice after reports of violence against drivers who refused to pay.

Etymology: May have derived from the 18th century verb "squeege," an intensified form of "squeeze" or from "squilgee," an implement used to scrape the deck of a ship after washing (mentioned in Melville's Moby Dick).
