A JOB FOR THE NON-SQUEAMISH

In 2001, New York artist and entrepreneur Justin Gignac was challenged by a friend to prove that anything can be sold as long as the product has the right packaging. While walking around Times Square, he came up with the idea of selling something that no one would ever want to buy: rubbish.

Gignac then began collecting rubbish from the streets of New York City and packaging it in see-through cubes printed with the words: “100 % authentic. Hand-picked from the fertile streets of NY NY” (NY NY = New York City in the state of New York).

When asked in an interview with BusinessWeek magazine how he has time to pursue his unusual activity, since he works during the day at an advertising agency, he said: “I usually collect trash late at night. The streets are always filthy, so people stare a lot less. I wear thick construction gloves and only pick up dry trash. Wet trash would rot in the cubes and besides, I’m a bit squeamish.”
