square away verb phrase
(adjective = squared away)
- arrange or deal with something in a satisfactory way
(Oxford English Dictionaries)
--- On large sailing ships, one of the most common types of sail systems is called the "square rig." For "landlubbers" (read further for more information the landlubber) this refers to sails that are carried on horizontal poles (spars) so that the sails are set perpendicular - or square - to the ship's keel. This allows the ship to be driven by a tailwind.
Thus when the captain of a sailing ship wanted to take advantage of the prevailing wind, he would tell the crew to "square away" the sails, meaning to fasten them to the horizontal spars. The term eventually began to be used in a figurative sense of tidying or cleaning up and then extended to also mean resolving an issue or bringing something to completion.
A landlubber is a sometimes slightly disparaging term for someone who is inexperienced at sea. It stems from "land" + "lubber," a 14th century word for a big, clumsy and stupid fellow who lives idly. It may stem from a Scandinavian source, but the Oxford Dictionary suggests it may be related to the Old French "lobeor," a dishonest person but in the sense of a less than intelligent cheater. One of the earliest recorded uses is in the expression abbey-lubber, essentially a lazy monk.
Another related term is lubberwort - also written libberwort - which is an obsolete term for food, drink or herbs that make one lazy. Finally, a landlubber might be found living in "Lubberland," an imaginary land where there is plenty to eat and drink without having to work.
