---
English comedian Arthur Roberts (1852–1933) invented a nonsense card game called Spoof that was based on tricking other players. In the late 19th century, the word basically became synonymous with deception or trickery.

Much later, in the 1950s, spoof referred to a parody of a book, film or other performance. One example is The Naked Gun, a crime-story spoof starring Leslie Nielsen.

There is nothing funny about spoofing, however. Primarily used in technical and financial fields, spoofing is when someone pretends to be someone else so as to get access to a specific system.

In financial trading, spoofing is an illegal market manipulation based on phantom orders. Another type of spoofing is to send emails that look like they came from a bank, and request that an account holder verify his or her bank details.

In this way, criminals attempt to steal data and get passwords or other personal information that can be used to access the user's account. Sometimes the imposter uses the fake identity to start an attack on network systems.
