WORD ORIGIN
When public officials such as heads of state or politicians assume office, they typically take an oath to carry out their duties. The phrase "solemnly swear" frequently precedes this oath and is intended to demonstrate that the person is making a serious and official promise to perform their job as written in law (usually in the form of a constitution).
In some countries, the word "solemn" is not included, such as in the UK when public officials take office. However, as the following examples show, the phrase "so help me God" is added at the end:
Oath of Allegiance
I (name) do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, her heirs and successors, according to law. So help me God.
The Official Oath
I (name) do swear that I will well and truly serve Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth in the office of .... So help me God.
In the United States, public officials may add "so help me God" at the end of their oath if they choose, although it is not required because of the constitutional First Amendment outlining the separation of church and state.
In Britain, jurors are sworn in with an oath. They must either take an oath on a holy book of their choice or they must affirm. This is similar to swearing in, but without the holy book. Each juror is asked to read aloud from a card on which the juror’s oath or affirmation is printed. In doing so the juror swears or affirms that he or she will faithfully give a true verdict according to the evidence.
