(Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary)

---
Sibling was the Old English word for "relative or kinsman;" in other words anyone related by blood. In the early 20th century the field of anthropology revived it to describe a brother or sister.

Researchers long ago discovered that for medical transplants, siblings are generally the best donor candidates because they usually share the closest genetic make-up. For this reason, in some countries scientists and doctors use a controversial procedure called the "saviour sibling" to treat children with blood diseases.

The process involves selecting in-vitro fertilized embryos that are an ideal tissue match for a sick sibling. Once the saviour sibling is born, stem cells can be taken from its bone marrow and transplanted into a sibling who suffers from a blood disease such as leukaemia or anaemia.
