A shrug is when you pull your shoulders up and then drop them down, most commonly to express the feeling "I don't know" or "I don't care". The word itself possibly comes from Danish skrugge, to slouch. This is a body position in which the shoulders are rounded and bent slightly forward.

We use the phrase to describe situations in which someone is able to respond calmly to bad news. (When the passengers heard that the train would be three hours late, they became incredibly angry. Miriam just shrugged it off)

If you use specific nouns in the expression "shrug off" you may have to change the word order. You might also include the word "of". (A good laugh can help you to shrug the weight of the world off of your shoulders)

You can use a shrugging motion to remove a coat, too. By the way, you can only shrug off a thing or an event. If you ignore a person, you "give him/her the cold shoulder".
