shortcoming noun
- a fault
(Cambridge Dictionary)
--- A shortcoming is a weakness, a failure, a deficit, a problem. It's simply another way of saying that something is "coming up short" of what is expected or needed.
For some people, math is a shortcoming in school for instance. Not being able to speak the language in a foreign country where you reside is a shortcoming. If a company has difficulty providing good customer service, that can be a real shortcoming, which in this case is a disadvantage.
Short appears in a wide range of other useful compound words such as:
- shortfall = similar to shortcoming, it means an amount that is less than the level that was expected or needed (The drought caused a significant shortfall in the water supplies).
- shortchange (verb) = to give someone back less money than they are owed when the person is buying something from you (The restaurant shortchanged me 2 euros!) or to treat someone unfairly, by giving them less than they deserve (Patients are being shortchanged due to cuts in hospital staff).
- shortsighted (adjective) = lacking a long-term view of things (The company's problems can be traced to a shortsighted marketing strategy)
