- faded, soiled, or otherwise impaired by remaining too long in a store

(Merriam-Webster’s Online Dictionary)
--- WORD ORIGIN
Shopworn is a combination of the words "shop", as in a retail store, and "worn", as in affected or damaged by wear or long use. Thus shopworn alludes to merchandise that has been sitting in a store for too long.
Shopworn can also be used in a figurative sense to describe something that has become old or boring from overuse. Does your neighbour tell the same jokes every weekend while you stand at the fence inspecting each other’s English lawns? Then his jokes are shopworn or he has a shopworn sense of humour.
Does Aunt Betty tell the same stories at family gatherings? For some, her recollections might be shopworn (or a sign of age). Does the boss dispense the same advice when asked for input (well, when I first started in this business, we…)?
