shellacking noun
- a complete defeat or beating
(Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary)
--- Shellacking is from "shellac" (shell + lac or lacquer)), which is a thin varnish made by dissolving this substance in denatured alcohol. It is used to coat and protect wood. Lacquer comes from the French "lacre", the name for a kind of sealing wax.
The slang sense of to "beat soundly" is from the 1920s and likely comes from the notion of shellac as a "finish." Shellac(k) is also an outdated term for an old phonograph record containing this substance, typically played at 78 rpm.
Although the word shellacking has been used for decades in the sense of a defeat, its popularity sky rocketed after U.S. President Barack Obama said the Democratic Party suffered a shellacking during the mid-term elections. Generations of young people who may have never heard the word - or just didn't pay much attention to it - can now thank the president for enhancing their vocabulary.
