Did you know?
get someone's goat idiom
- to cause annoyance to someone
(Collins English Dictionary)
--- At first glance, one might guess that the expression "get someone's goat" is somehow related to the verb "goad," meaning to urge or force someone to do something by annoying them (He was goaded into a shouting match). There is no evidence to back up this theory however.
The only thing we know is that it originated in America in the early 20th century. One of the more common explanations, which has never been proven, is that it derives from horse racing.
As the myth goes, trainers once kept goats in the stables to keep their high-strung horses calm and relaxed. Since goats are not easily flustered, their presence supposedly had a calming influence. Unscrupulous stable workers would then steal the goat, or goats, the evening before a race, thinking that the horse would become nervous or moody and not perform well during the race.
Others believe the expression has something to do with scapegoat or that it originated an old French phrase prendre la chèvre (to take the goat). Again, this is just guesswork. But don't let it get your goat.
